Tom Chambers Brackets & Hooks

We sell a wide variety of brackets and hooks and whilst the choice of which one to use is largely a matter of taste, do give a little thought to whether you a looking to support a light load or a heavy one. Whilst a hanging basket or other container will have its own weight, this usually is not nearly as great as the weight of the wet compost it contains, so consider that the biggest part of the weight load you need to support. If you are looking for a bracket to carry the largest loads, look at two things – most important is some sort of bracing, a scroll or plain strut under the arm will give significant support and will help your bracket carry the load safely – so don’t use the Vintage Brackets to carry the largest hanging baskets. Secondly look at the strength of the metal support arm itself – the thicker it is the stronger it will be. But all our brackets will carry pretty much any or our products. The final bit of the story is how well you attach it to the wall, or fence, or whatever; clearly the strongest bracket attached to a fence with drawing pins will not support much weight! So, if you are attaching your bracket to a masonry wall, drill the wall with the correct size drill for the plugs you are going to use, try to drill into brick or stone rather than mortar and use the right size screw for the plug – note that these are not supplied with the bracket. Use screws 35-40 mm long, 3.5 -5 mm gauge (either 6’s, 8’s or 10’s in old money). Always use two screws to attach any bracket. The one piece brackets, especially curved and straight are strong enough for any normal load, but they do still depend on secure fixing. Note that the size given for a bracket is the distance from the wall to the hanging point, so that you will see that most of the brackets will suspend any of the baskets – only half the basket diameter goes back towards the wall. When positioning the bracket don’t forget that the basket will be lower than the hook point by the length of the chains.
